Protection and boundaries - Chapter I
WHAT DOES PROTECTION ACTUALLY MEAN?
Before we start building magical walls around ourselves, let's figure out what we're actually protecting.
If you've spent any amount of time around witchcraft, spirituality, tarot, energy work, or anything vaguely mystical, you've probably heard the word protection approximately 7,842 times.
"Protect your energy."
"Protect your aura."
"Protect your space."
"Protect yourself before doing magic."
"Put black tourmaline/ selenite in every corner of your house or by your windows."
Okay.
But...
What does protection actually mean?
And more importantly:
Protection from what?
That's where things get interesting.
🖤 Protection isn't about living in fear
One of the biggest misunderstandings about spiritual protection is the idea that you constantly need to defend yourself against invisible threats.
That's not how I want you to approach it.
You don't need to wake up every morning thinking:
"Oh God. Who's sending me negative energy today?"
You have enough things to worry about.
Like emails.
Bills.
People who don't know how to use their turn signal.
And whatever your cat is currently plotting.
Protection isn't supposed to make you more afraid of the world.
It should help you feel more grounded and intentional within it.
Think of protection as creating a conscious relationship with your own space, attention, emotions, and boundaries.
So what are we actually protecting?
A lot more than you might think.
🕯️ Your physical space
Your home is where you spend a huge portion of your life.
It's where you sleep.
Rest.
Cry.
Laugh.
Work.
Eat.
Hide from people. (Pretend you didn't see that text.)
Your home can become a place where your nervous system knows:
"I can relax here."
Cleaning, organizing, opening windows, changing the atmosphere, lighting a candle, playing music, or creating a small spiritual space can all become part of that process.
You don't need to believe that you're literally removing supernatural entities from your living room.
You can simply view the ritual as a deliberate reset of your environment.
🖤 Your emotional space
This is a big one.
Your emotional space is affected by the people you interact with.
Imagine you receive a message from someone.
Nothing technically "bad" happened.
But suddenly you're anxious.
You start overthinking.
Your stomach feels tight.
You replay the conversation for the next three hours.
You can't concentrate.
You check your phone again.
And again.
And again.
Congratulations.
That person has now rented approximately 37 square metres of space inside your brain without paying rent.
Eviction notice.
Your emotional boundaries matter.
🌙 Your attention
Your attention is one of your most valuable resources.
And people often forget that.
Every message you answer.
Every argument you participate in.
Every social media argument you read.
Every person you try to convince.
Every person whose approval you're chasing... gets a tiny piece of your attention.
Protection can therefore mean asking:
"Does this deserve my attention?"
That's a surprisingly powerful question.
Protection can be physical, emotional, practical AND spiritual.
I like to think about protection as having several layers.
Layer One — Physical
Locks.
Privacy.
Personal safety.
Secure passwords.
Safe environments.
Knowing where the exits are.
Basic stuff.
Not particularly witchy.
Still extremely important.
Layer Two — Emotional
Recognizing when someone repeatedly makes you feel unsafe, exhausted, anxious, manipulated, or disrespected.
Learning when to step away.
Learning when you don't owe someone another explanation.
Layer Three — Mental
Being aware of what you're consuming.
Not every opinion deserves your attention.
Not every argument deserves your participation.
Not every stranger on the internet deserves access to your nervous system.
Especially that guy in the comments who has apparently made it his life's mission to tell you that your spiritual practice is wrong.
Sir.
Please go outside.
Layer Four — Spiritual
This is where your personal practice can come in.
Meditation.
Prayer.
Visualization.
Cleansing.
Protective symbols.
Ritual.
Candles.
Herbs.
Crystals.
Sound.
Intentional objects.
Different traditions have different approaches.
There isn't one universal witchcraft rulebook hidden underneath a giant rock somewhere.
And honestly, if there is one, someone forgot to send me the address.
So how does spiritual protection "work"?
This is where I want to be very clear.
There is no scientific evidence establishing that rituals create an invisible supernatural shield around a person.
However, rituals can still have meaning.
They can help us focus.
They can mark transitions.
They can create a sense of control and intention.
They can become grounding practices.
They can help us consciously acknowledge:
"This is my space."
"This is what I value."
"This is what I am choosing."
For many people, that's meaningful enough.
And if you hold spiritual beliefs about energy, spirits, deities, ancestors, or other forms of unseen influence, your understanding may go beyond that.
That's okay.
Your spiritual practice is yours.
Just remember the difference between:
"This practice has meaning for me."
and
"This is scientifically proven to work this way."
Those aren't the same statement.
Protection is also about discernment
This might be one of the most important skills you can develop.
Discernment.
Not every strange feeling is a spiritual warning.
Not every coincidence is a message from the universe.
Not every bad mood is someone else's energy.
And not every person you dislike is secretly sending you something.
Sometimes... you're tired.
Sometimes you're hungry.
Sometimes you haven't slept properly in three days.
Sometimes someone annoyed you.
Sometimes your body is simply telling you:
"Please sit down and drink some water."
Spirituality should not require us to stop listening to common sense.
Quite the opposite.
A thoughtful spiritual practice should encourage you to become more aware, not less.
A LITTLE EXERCISE
Before moving on, take a moment.
Think about the last time you felt completely drained after interacting with someone.
Don't immediately label it "negative energy."
Instead, ask yourself:
What actually happened?
Did they criticize you?
Ignore your boundaries?
Talk constantly about their problems?
Make demands?
Manipulate you?
Dismiss your feelings?
Did you simply have no emotional capacity left that day?
Write down what happened.
Now ask:
What could I have controlled?
Maybe you could have ended the conversation earlier.
Maybe you could have said no.
Maybe you could have stopped responding.
Maybe you could have taken some time alone afterward.
Maybe the situation genuinely wasn't your responsibility.
That is protection too.
RAVN'S RULE OF PROTECTION
Here's the first rule I want you to remember:
Protection should make your world feel safer, not smaller.
If your spiritual practice makes you afraid of everyone... stop.
If you feel like you need to perform rituals constantly because something terrible might happen... stop.
Ground yourself.
Look at what's actually happening.
Ask for help when you need it.
And remember that you are allowed to practice spirituality without turning your entire life into a supernatural emergency.
