Protection and boundaries - Chapter III
THE ART OF DISCERNMENT
Knowing when to trust your intuition — and when to check the damn facts.
SPIRITUAL PROTECTION VS. PRACTICAL PROTECTION
Because yes, you can have a witchy altar AND lock the damn door.
Let's talk about one of the most important distinctions in this entire class.
There are practices that are spiritual or symbolic.
And there are practices that provide practical, real-world protection.
Both can matter.
But they aren't interchangeable.
THE TWO CAN WORK TOGETHER
Imagine you're worried about your home.
Your practical protection might include:
🔒 Locking your doors.
🔒 Checking windows.
🔒 Keeping your personal information private.
🔒 Having working smoke detectors.
🔒 Knowing emergency contacts.
🔒 Having a plan for emergencies.
🔒 Using appropriate security measures.
Those things are practical.
Now imagine you also want to create a ritual that makes your home feel spiritually protected.
You might:
🕯️ Light a candle.
🌿 Place meaningful herbs nearby.
🔔 Ring a bell.
🌙 Visualize protective light.
🖤 Display a protective symbol.
📖 Say a prayer or affirmation.
Those things can be spiritual or symbolic.
You don't have to choose one or the other.
THE LOCKED DOOR EXAMPLE
Let's say you perform a beautiful protection ritual around your house.
You cleanse the rooms.
You light candles.
You visualize a protective boundary.
You place a meaningful symbol near your door.
Beautiful.
Now...
Did you lock the door?
Because if the answer is no, I'm going to have to revoke your imaginary witch license.
😂
A ritual can be meaningful.
But it shouldn't replace basic safety.
Your spell can say:
"Nothing harmful may enter."
Your lock can say:
"And here's the physical barrier just in case."
Teamwork.
WHEN SPIRITUAL PRACTICE CAN BE HELPFUL
Spiritual practices can be useful for creating:
A sense of ritual
A repeated practice can mark a transition.
For example:
"I'm finished with work."
"I'm entering my meditation."
"I'm leaving today's stress behind."
"I'm preparing my home for rest."
A sense of intention
Ritual gives you an opportunity to consciously decide:
What am I focusing on?
A sense of comfort
Familiar rituals can feel comforting, particularly during periods of uncertainty or stress.
A sense of personal meaning
Symbols, objects, prayers, traditions and rituals can carry personal significance.
And that meaning matters.
WHEN PRACTICAL HELP IS NECESSARY
There are situations where you should not rely on spiritual practices alone.
If someone is threatening you... seek practical support.
If you're experiencing abuse... seek appropriate help.
If you're afraid for your physical safety... prioritize getting somewhere safe.
If you're experiencing severe psychological distress... reach out to a qualified professional or appropriate crisis support.
If you're worried about your health... talk to a healthcare professional.
You are not "less spiritual" because you seek professional help.
Actually, I would argue that recognizing when you need help is a pretty damn good form of discernment.
AVOIDING SPIRITUAL BYPASSING
Here's another phrase worth knowing:
Spiritual bypassing
This is when spiritual ideas are used to avoid dealing with difficult emotions, problems, responsibilities, or real-world situations.
For example:
Someone is treating you terribly.
Instead of addressing the behaviour, you tell yourself: "I just need to raise my vibration."
No.
Perhaps you need to raise your boundaries.
Someone keeps violating your privacy.
You tell yourself: "I'll just cleanse my energy."
Lovely.
And maybe... change the password.
Someone is genuinely dangerous.
You tell yourself: "The universe will protect me."
Please don't rely on that.
Take practical precautions.
Spiritual practices can accompany real-world action.
They shouldn't replace it.
THE "ENERGY" QUESTION
You may eventually encounter someone saying:
"I can feel that person sending negative energy toward me."
Maybe.
Maybe not.
The important question isn't necessarily:
"Can I prove that?"
The more useful questions are:
"What am I experiencing?"
"What evidence do I actually have?"
"What can I control?"
"What action would help me feel safer?"
That keeps you grounded.
You can respect your intuition without assuming every feeling has a supernatural explanation.
And honestly?
That's a much more powerful skill.
INTUITION VS. FEAR
This one deserves attention.
People sometimes confuse intuition with fear.
They can feel similar.
You might think:
"Something feels wrong."
Instead of immediately deciding what that means, pause.
Ask:
What happened?
What did the person actually say or do?
What am I feeling?
Fear?
Anger?
Anxiety?
Discomfort?
What do I know?
Separate facts from assumptions.
What do I need?
Distance?
Information?
Support?
Rest?
A boundary?
What is the safest reasonable action?
You don't have to solve the mystery of the universe before taking care of yourself.
A SIMPLE THREE-QUESTION TEST
When something feels "off," ask:
1. WHAT DO I KNOW?
Facts.
Not guesses.
Not interpretations.
Facts.
2. WHAT DO I FEEL?
Pay attention to your emotions and body.
Don't dismiss them.
But don't automatically treat them as proof of a supernatural cause either.
3. WHAT CAN I DO?
Choose a practical action.
Maybe it's:
Leaving.
Waiting.
Asking a question.
Setting a boundary.
Talking to someone.
Getting more information.
Resting.
Or simply doing nothing until you feel calmer.
That last one is underrated.
You don't have to react immediately.
YOUR PROTECTION TOOLBOX
By now, you can probably see that protection doesn't have to be one giant ritual.
Think of it as a toolbox.
🖤 Physical protection
Practical safety measures.
🖤 Emotional protection
Boundaries and healthy relationships.
🖤 Mental protection
Discernment and managing your attention.
🖤 Spiritual protection
Your rituals, symbols, beliefs and practices.
🖤 Social protection
Supportive people and healthy community.
🖤 Environmental protection
Creating spaces where you can rest and feel comfortable.
And the beautiful thing?
You get to decide what belongs in your toolbox.
MINI PRACTICE
BUILD YOUR FIRST PROTECTION PLAN
Take a few minutes and complete these:
Something I want to protect:
Something that currently drains me:
A boundary I could strengthen:
One practical action I can take:
One spiritual practice I would like to try:
Someone I can turn to if I need support:
Now look at your answers.
Notice how your protection plan probably contains very little "magic."
And that's okay.
Because the goal isn't to become magically untouchable.
The goal is to become more aware of yourself, your environment, your limits, and your choices.
RAVN'S FINAL THOUGHT
Protection isn't about becoming afraid of everything you cannot see.
It's about becoming more conscious of what you can see.
Your relationships.
Your habits.
Your environment.
Your reactions.
Your boundaries.
Your needs.
Your choices.
And if a little candle, ritual, meditation, symbol, herb, prayer or moonlit moment helps you feel connected to that process?
Beautiful.
Use it.
Just don't forget the practical stuff.
Because being a witch doesn't mean you have to abandon common sense.
It means you can put a little magic beside it.
And honestly?
That's much more interesting.
🖤 BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
Take a breath.
Look around your space.
Ask yourself:
"What am I protecting?"
Not who am I protecting myself from?
Not what is attacking me?
Just:
What matters enough to me that I want to protect it?
Maybe it's your peace.
Your children.
Your creativity.
Your home.
Your time.
Your healing.
Your privacy.
Your freedom.
Your ability to be yourself.
Whatever your answer is...
remember it.
Because in the next chapters, we're going to start talking about how to actually protect yourself (The witchy way)
And that's where things get really interesting.
