Protection and boundaries - CHAPTER V

🌿 PROTECTIVE HERBS, PLANTS & PURIFICATION TOOLS

Cleansing your body, your energy & your space

Approximate time: 20–35 minutes

You've grounded yourself.

You've opened and activated your chakras.

You've connected with Source.

You've created your protective golden bubble.

Now...

let's clean house.

Literally.

🖤 WHAT IS PURIFICATION?

Purification is one of the oldest and most recognizable ideas found throughout spiritual and religious practices around the world.

The methods vary enormously.

Some traditions use:

🌿 Plants and herbs
🔥 Fire
💧 Water
🧂 Salt
🔔 Bells and sound
🙏 Prayer
🌬️ Smoke
🌙 Moonlight
☀️ Sunlight
🧘 Meditation
🎵 Music
🪶 Feathers
🕯️ Candlelight

And many other practices.

The idea behind spiritual cleansing is generally to create a symbolic transition.

Something feels heavy? You cleanse.

You've had a difficult interaction? You cleanse.

You've moved into a new home? You cleanse.

You're beginning a ritual? You cleanse.

You've had a particularly weird day and feel like your entire soul needs a shower?

...

You cleanse.

😂

But cleansing isn't about becoming afraid of everything around you.

It's about intentionally saying:

"This is my space.
I choose what I welcome into it."

🌿 THE TWO TOOLS WE'LL START WITH

For this practice, we're going to focus especially on:

WHITE SAGE and PALO SANTO and additional herbs/plants

Both are widely used today in spiritual cleansing practices.

But they have different histories, cultural contexts and botanical identities, so let's get to know them before we light anything.

🌿 WHITE SAGE

Salvia apiana

White sage is an aromatic plant native to parts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.

It has a long history of use among Indigenous peoples of those regions, including in ceremonial and spiritual contexts.

Today, white sage is also widely sold commercially as a cleansing herb.

You'll often see bundles of dried white sage being burned to create fragrant smoke.

However, there is an important distinction: the modern commercial practice of burning white sage should not automatically be called "smudging."

"Smudging" can refer to specific Indigenous ceremonial practices, and those practices are not simply synonymous with burning a bundle of sage.

So when you're teaching your own practice, I would simply call what you're doing: smoke cleansing or sage cleansing.

This keeps the practice clear without claiming an Indigenous ceremony as your own.

✨ WHY DO PEOPLE USE WHITE SAGE?

In many modern witchcraft and spiritual practices, white sage is associated with:

Cleansing · purification · protection · clearing unwanted energy · transitions

For practitioners who believe in energetic cleansing, the smoke is used symbolically to carry away or clear what they consider unwanted energy.

Whether you understand that spiritually, symbolically, psychologically, or simply as a ritual that helps you reset your environment... the practice can be meaningful.

And if you're someone who works spiritually with the idea that certain energies are incompatible with the plant's smoke, you may experience the ritual as a particularly strong form of cleansing.

The important thing is to understand that this is a spiritual belief, not something scientifically established as a measurable property of the smoke.

🌳 PALO SANTO

Bursera graveolens

Palo santo means "holy wood" in Spanish.

It refers commonly to aromatic wood from trees in the Bursera genus, particularly Bursera graveolens.

Palo santo has traditional uses in parts of South America, including spiritual, ceremonial and medicinal contexts.

Today, it has become popular internationally as a fragrant smoke-cleansing tool.

Its scent is usually much sweeter and more woody than white sage.

Many people describe it as:

🌳 Warm
🍋 Citrusy
🌲 Woody
🍯 Slightly sweet
🔥 Earthy

In modern spiritual practice, palo santo is commonly associated with:

Cleansing · protection · peace · grounding · positive intentions

Some practitioners prefer white sage when they want a stronger "clearing" ritual and palo santo when they want to cleanse while creating a calmer, more welcoming atmosphere.

There is no universal magical rule saying one is stronger than the other.

Your relationship with the tool matters.

🌿 WHITE SAGE OR PALO SANTO?

You don't need both.

You don't need either.

But if you enjoy working with them, you may eventually develop your own preference.

For example:

WHITE SAGE

You might choose it when you want to symbolize:

CLEARING

"Something feels heavy and I want a reset."

PALO SANTO

You might choose it when you want to symbolize:

RENEWAL

"The space has been cleared. Now I want to fill it with peace."

Some practitioners even use them in that order:

Clear → then invite.

Again, this is a personal spiritual practice, not a universal rule.

🖤 BEFORE YOU LIGHT ANYTHING

There is something very important about smoke cleansing:

You don't start with the smoke.

You start with yourself.

That's why we completed the previous chapter first.

Before cleansing your home, you have already:

✓ Grounded yourself.

✓ Worked through your chakra meditation.

✓ Connected with Source.

✓ Created your personal protective bubble.

This matters because you don't want to approach cleansing from a place of fear.

You are not walking around your home thinking:

"OH GOD WHAT'S IN THE CLOSET?"

😂

You're approaching it from a place of:

"I am grounded. I am protected. I am intentionally clearing my space."

Big difference.

🪟 OPEN THE EXIT FIRST

Before beginning, choose an exterior opening.

A window.

A balcony door.

A patio door.

A front or back door.

Something that allows air to move toward the outdoors.

This will become the first exit point for your cleansing ritual.

You don't need every window open before you start.

You don't need your house freezing.

You don't need it wide open either. Just a little bit at least to let the bad energy go away.

So yes, one appropriate opening can be enough.

The symbolism is simple:

What you're releasing has somewhere to go.

🌿 PREPARE YOUR TOOL

Choose either:

White sage or Palo santo.

Light the end carefully.

You are not trying to create a huge fire.

You are creating smoke.

Once the material is glowing and producing smoke, keep the flame under control and use an appropriate heatproof holder or container.

Never leave burning material unattended.

Keep it away from curtains, paper, furniture, hair and anything else that would prefer not to become part of your ritual.

And please remember:

Smoke is still smoke.

Good intentions do not make lungs immune to it.

If you have asthma, respiratory sensitivities, small children, pets, or poor ventilation, consider a smoke-free method instead.

🖤 STEP ONE

PROTECT YOURSELF

Before moving through your home, stand quietly.

Feel your feet.

Take a breath.

Remember the golden bubble from the previous meditation.

See it around you.

Three metres.

All around you.

You are grounded.

You are centred.

You are protected.

Now bring the smoke gently around yourself.

Not directly into your face.

Move it around your body.

Around your shoulders.

Your arms.

Your back.

Your legs.

Around your feet.

You don't need clouds of smoke.

A little smoke is enough for the ritual.

You are symbolically cleansing yourself before cleansing your environment.

🖤 YOUR WORDS

As you cleanse yourself, say:

"I command the bad energies to leave,
and I ask the good energies to stay."

You can say it aloud.

You can whisper it.

Or you can say it silently.

The important part is that you understand what you're saying.

You are setting an intention.

👥 WHAT ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE?

If you're cleansing a home where other people live, you may invite them to participate.

If they're comfortable with it, you can gently move the smoke around them as well.

Again: never force smoke onto someone who doesn't want it.

And remember that some people may not share your beliefs.

That's okay.

You can still cleanse your own space and your own energy.

You don't need everyone in the house to become a witch before dinner.

😂

🏠 STEP TWO

BEGIN WITH THE FIRST ROOM

Now choose the first room.

I recommend starting near the exterior opening you prepared.

Stand near the entrance.

Take a breath.

Raise your cleansing tool.

And say:

"I command the bad energies to leave,
and I ask the good energies to stay."

Now slowly move through the room.

🌬️ MOVE THE SMOKE EVERYWHERE

This part matters.

Don't just wave the smoke in the middle of the room and announce:

"Done."

😂

Take your time.

Move the smoke toward:

Corners

Closets

Behind doors

Around windows

Under tables

Around furniture

Near entrances

Around your altar

Around your workspace

Anywhere that feels neglected or stagnant

You don't need to fill the room with smoke.

A light amount moving through the space is enough for the ritual.

As you move, repeat:

"I command the bad energies to leave,
and I ask the good energies to stay."

Imagine the smoke carrying your intention through the room.

🪟 THE EXIT

Once you have moved through the entire room...

bring the smoke toward the open window or door.

Imagine anything unwanted moving toward that opening.

And then say:

"I command the bad energies to leave, and I ask the good energies to stay."

Pause.

Take a breath.

Imagine the room becoming lighter.

Then leave the window open for a little while so the air can circulate safely.

🚪 STEP THREE

MOVE TO THE NEXT ROOM

Now repeat the process.

Room by room.

You don't need to rush.

You are creating a ritual journey through your home.

For every room:

1.

Enter.

2.

Set your intention.

3.

Create smoke.

4.

Move it through the corners and spaces.

5.

Repeat your words.

6.

Guide the smoke toward the outside opening.

7.

Allow fresh air to enter.

Then move on.

🏡 THE WHOLE HOUSE

Imagine you're creating a wave of cleansing.

Room...

by...

room.

Bedroom.

Bathroom.

Kitchen.

Living room.

Hallway.

Office.

Closets.

Basement.

Entrance.

Any space where you spend time.

And if there is a room you rarely use?

Don't forget it.

Energy doesn't care whether you remembered to dust.

😂

🌬️ YOU DON'T NEED A SMOKE CLOUD

This deserves its own reminder.

You are not trying to make your house look like a haunted nightclub.

A little smoke is enough.

You don't need:

❌ Thick clouds.

❌ Burning huge quantities.

❌ Smoke filling your lungs.

❌ Every window closed.

❌ To make your neighbours think your house is on fire.

The purpose is the ritual.

Not the amount of smoke.

PS: Never burn herbs, wood, incense or other materials if you are unsure they are safe to burn, and never leave burning material unattended.

🖤 THE FINAL ROOM

When you reach the final room, take your time.

Stand in the centre.

Take a breath.

Look around.

Imagine the entire home now feeling lighter.

The smoke slowly leaves.

Fresh air comes in.

And say:

"I command the bad energies to leave,
and I ask the good energies to stay.
May this home be peaceful.
May this home be protected.
May this home be filled with love, clarity and good intentions."

Then allow the remaining smoke to move toward the open window or door.

✨ NOW WE INVITE

This is an important part of cleansing.

We're not only releasing.

We're also choosing what we want to cultivate.

After the smoke has cleared, close your eyes.

Imagine soft golden light entering your home.

It comes through the windows.

The doors.

The cracks of light around the curtains.

It fills the rooms.

Your home becomes warm.

Golden.

Peaceful.

Safe.

And say:

"I welcome peace.
I welcome love.
I welcome clarity.
I welcome protection.
I welcome what supports the wellbeing of this home."

Sit with that feeling for a moment.

🛡️ SEALING YOUR HOME

Now return to your protective visualization from Chapter IV.

Imagine the golden light expanding beyond the walls of your home.

One metre.

Two metres.

Three metres.

A golden sphere surrounds the entire building.

It is not a prison.

It is a symbolic boundary.

A reminder:

This is my space.

Imagine the boundary becoming brighter.

Then say:

"This home is protected.
This home is grounded.
This home is peaceful.
What supports this space may enter.
What does not belong here may remain outside."

Take a breath.

Your cleansing is complete.

🔔 SOUND — ANOTHER POWERFUL TOOL

Smoke isn't your only option.

Sound can be used as a beautiful purification and reset ritual.

You can use:

🔔 Bells

🎶 Singing bowls

🪘 Drums

👏 Clapping

🎵 Music

🗣️ Chanting

🎼 Your own voice

The principle is simple:

movement + sound + intention.

Walk around your home.

Ring the bell.

Clap in the corners.

Play music throughout the space.

Imagine the sound moving through areas that feel stagnant.

🎵 MUSIC & "HIGH VIBRATION" FREQUENCIES

You'll find many spiritual playlists online describing certain frequencies as:

"high vibration"

"healing frequencies"

"energy cleansing frequencies"

"chakra frequencies"

or frequencies such as 432 Hz, 528 Hz, 741 Hz, 852 Hz, 963 Hz, and many others.

These are very popular in modern spiritual communities.

You can absolutely use them as part of your ritual if the music helps you feel calm, focused, grounded or spiritually connected.

However, it's important to understand that claims that particular sound frequencies scientifically remove negative energy, heal specific organs, activate chakras, or raise your vibration have not been established as scientific facts.

So I would teach it like this:

"Choose the sound that creates the feeling you want to cultivate."

If 700 Hz or higher-frequency music makes your space feel bright and clear?

Use it.

If a singing bowl makes you feel grounded?

Use it.

If dark ambient music makes you feel witchy and powerful?

Honestly...

also valid.

Your ritual doesn't have to sound like a spa.

😂

🕯️ CANDLELIGHT

Fire can also become part of purification.

White candles are commonly associated with:

Purification.

Peace.

Clarity.

Protection.

Black candles are commonly associated in modern magical practice with:

Protection.

Banishing.

Boundaries.

Release.

Again, these are symbolic associations, and different traditions use colours differently.

You can simply light a candle and set an intention:

"May this light represent clarity and protection."

Never leave a candle unattended.

🧂 SALT

Salt has a long history of symbolic associations with purification and protection in various traditions.

You can place a small bowl of salt near an entrance.

You can incorporate it into certain rituals.

Or you can simply hold a little salt while setting an intention.

You don't need to dump salt around every doorway.

Your landlord would probably prefer that you didn't.

😂

And don't assume that every salt ritual is safe for pets or surfaces.

Research first.

💎 CRYSTALS

Crystals are another popular tool in modern spiritual practice.

Different crystals are traditionally associated with different intentions.

For protection, you'll often encounter:

🖤 Black Tourmaline

Commonly associated with grounding and protection.

🖤 Obsidian

Often associated with grounding, reflection and protection.

💜 Amethyst

Commonly associated with spiritual practice, peace and intuition.

🤍 Clear Quartz

Often treated as an all-purpose or amplifying stone in modern crystal practices.

🔮 Smoky Quartz

Commonly associated with grounding and releasing unwanted energy.

🤍 Selenite

Commonly associated with purification, clarity, peace,  protection, spiritual connection, energetic boundaries.

The guardian of the threshold. If there is one crystal I particularly love incorporating into a protection practice, it's selenite.

Selenite is a variety of gypsum and is usually recognized by its beautiful white, translucent appearance.

It has a very soft, luminous appearance, which makes it especially beautiful for rituals involving light.

And there is something about a piece of white selenite sitting beside a candle that just screams:

"Yes. I have my life together."

Even if the laundry pile says otherwise.

😂

🕯️ WHY SELENITE FOR PROTECTION?

In modern spiritual practice, selenite is often treated as a cleansing and protective stone.

Some practitioners believe it helps clear unwanted energy and creates a protective energetic environment.

Others use it more symbolically — as a physical reminder of clarity, peace and intention.

For this class, we're going to use selenite as a symbolic guardian of thresholds.

And thresholds are important.

A threshold is the point between one space and another.

A door.

A window.

An entrance.

A doorway between your private space and the outside world.

These are natural places to create a protective intention.

🚪 SELENITE ABOVE YOUR DOORS

One simple way to incorporate selenite into your practice is to place a piece above the inside of a doorway.

You can use:

  • A selenite wand

  • A small selenite stick

  • A selenite tower

  • A flat piece of selenite

  • Another secure form that won't fall

Place it somewhere safe and stable.

Then hold your intention.

You might say:

"May this threshold remain protected.
May what enters this home support peace, love and wellbeing.
May anything harmful remain outside."

Imagine a soft white light extending from the selenite across the doorway.

Think of it as a symbolic energetic filter.

Not a wall.

Not a prison.

A threshold.

🪟 SELENITE UNDER OR ABOVE WINDOWS

Windows are another beautiful place to use selenite.

You can place a piece:

Above the window

On the windowsill

or near the window, as long as it is secure.

Again, we're creating a symbolic protective point.

You can imagine the selenite creating a soft white glow around the window.

Then say:

"Only what supports the peace of this home may enter."

Imagine the light spreading across the entire window.

You can repeat this with every exterior window in your home.

🏠 CREATING A SELENITE PROTECTION GRID

Now let's make it a little more witchy.

Imagine every exterior doorway and window in your home as a point of entry.

At each point, place a small piece of selenite.

You now have a series of protective points around your home.

You can imagine invisible lines of white light connecting them.

Door...

window...

window...

door...

window...

Until your entire home is surrounded by a beautiful network of light.

You can imagine it connecting to the golden protective bubble from your meditation.

Now you have:

GOLDEN LIGHT

surrounding the entire home

SELENITE THRESHOLDS

marking the entry points

YOUR INTENTION

directing what you want your home to represent.

And suddenly...

your house has a magical security system.

No monthly subscription required.

😂

You can also place selenite beside your bed.

A small piece on your nightstand can become part of your evening ritual.

Before going to sleep:

Take a breath.

Look at the selenite.

Imagine soft white light surrounding your bedroom.

Then say:

"This room is a place of rest.
I release the day.
I welcome peace.
I welcome calm.
I am safe to rest here.
I allow my mind and body to soften.
May this space hold peaceful energy throughout the night."

Again:

These are spiritual and traditional associations, not scientifically established properties.

You don't need to own them.

And please don't spend $80 on a tiny rock because TikTok told you it will protect your aura.

The rock doesn't know your credit card number.

💎 HOW TO USE A CRYSTAL

You can hold the crystal during meditation.

Place it near your altar.

Keep it near your front door.

Carry it with you.

Or simply use it as a visual reminder of your intention.

Hold it in your hand.

Take a breath.

And say: "This object represents protection and grounding for me."

That's enough.

The meaning comes from the relationship you create with the object.

🪶 FEATHERS

Some practitioners use feathers to move smoke through a space.

If you choose to use one:

Never take feathers from protected wild birds.

Use a legally obtained feather, a naturally shed feather where appropriate, or a decorative alternative.

You don't need a real feather anyway.

A beautiful fan made from a safe, ethically sourced material can work just as well as a ritual object.

🌙 MOONLIGHT

You can also cleanse symbolically through moonlight.

Place a meaningful object near a safe window.

Spend a few moments under the moon.

Journal.

Meditate.

Set an intention.

The moon doesn't need to physically "charge" an object for the ritual to have meaning.

You can simply use the lunar cycle as a beautiful natural rhythm for reflection.

☀️ SUNLIGHT

The same applies to sunlight.

Open the curtains.

Let the room become bright.

Stand in the sunlight.

Imagine the darkness leaving.

Say: "I welcome clarity, warmth and renewal."

Sometimes...

the witchcraft is just opening the damn curtains.

😂

🛁 WATER CLEANSING

Your shower can become one of the easiest cleansing rituals you'll ever perform.

As the water runs over you, imagine the day leaving.

Imagine stress going down the drain.

You can say: "I release what isn't mine to carry."

Then dry yourself.

Put on comfortable clothes.

Drink some water.

And continue your day.

No crystals required.

🔥 FIRE + 🌬️ AIR + 💧 WATER + 🌍 EARTH

You can also think of your cleansing practice through the four classical elements often used symbolically in Western magical traditions:

🔥 FIRE

Transformation.

Light.

Release.

🌬️ AIR

Movement.

Breath.

Thought.

Communication.

💧 WATER

Emotion.

Cleansing.

Flow.

Renewal.

🌍 EARTH

Grounding.

Stability.

Physicality.

Protection.

You can incorporate all four into a ritual.

A candle.

A bell or incense.

A bowl of water.

A stone or herb.

Suddenly your little ritual has become a full elemental ceremony.

And yes...

now you may officially feel witchy.

🖤 THE COMPLETE CLEANSING FORMULA

If you ever forget everything from this chapter, remember this:

PROTECT

Ground yourself.

Create your protective bubble.

CLEANSE

Choose your tool.

Smoke.

Sound.

Water.

Air.

Fire.

Visualization.

DECLARE

Say what you're releasing.

MOVE

Take the cleansing through your entire space.

RELEASE

Open a window or door.

Allow the ritual to symbolically move outward.

INVITE

Bring in what you want:

Peace.

Love.

Clarity.

Protection.

Creativity.

SEAL

Create your golden protective boundary around yourself and your home.

CLOSE

Thank your spiritual framework, Source, deity, ancestors, nature, or simply yourself — whatever fits your beliefs.

Extinguish anything burning safely.

Put your tools away.

Drink some water.

Return to your normal life.

🖤 ONE LAST THING...

Don't become obsessed with cleansing.

You don't need to smoke your house every time someone sends you an annoying text.

You don't need to cleanse because you had a bad thought.

You don't need to cleanse because you walked past someone who looked grumpy.

And you don't need to interpret every uncomfortable feeling as an attack.

Use cleansing as a ritual reset, not a source of fear.

If the ritual makes you feel grounded, peaceful and connected...

beautiful.

If it starts making you afraid of your home, other people, or ordinary life...

step back.

Ground yourself.

Talk to someone.

Return to the practical world.

The purpose of protection is to help you feel more capable of living your life, not afraid to live it.

🌙 YOUR CHAPTER V PRACTICE

Tonight, or whenever you're ready:

1.

Protect yourself using the meditation from Chapter IV.

2.

Choose your cleansing tool.

White sage.

Palo santo.

Sound.

Water.

Or another method.

3.

Open an exterior window or door.

4.

Cleanse yourself.

5.

Begin with one room.

6.

Repeat:

"I command the bad energies to leave,
and I ask the good energies to stay."

7.

Move through every corner.

8.

Guide the smoke or your chosen cleansing method toward the open window.

9.

Repeat throughout your home.

10.

When finished, invite in the energy you want.

Peace.

Love.

Clarity.

Protection.

11.

Create your golden protective bubble around your home.

12.

Close the ritual.

Then...

go make tea.

You just cleansed an entire house.

You earned it.

🖤

🪶 RAVN'S RULE OF CLEANSING

"Don't cleanse because you're afraid.
Cleanse because you're choosing what kind of space you want to create."

Your home doesn't have to be perfect.

Your energy doesn't have to be perfect.

Your ritual doesn't have to be perfect.

You don't have to perform every step perfectly.

There is no magical exam at the end.

There is only your intention, your awareness, your practice, and the meaning you give it.

And if you want to light some white sage, open every window, play dramatic music and walk around your house like the main character in a gothic movie...

I'm certainly not going to stop you.

Just remember to put the burning thing out when you're finished.

Even witches have smoke detectors.

— Ravn 🖤
